The card we’ve picked for July’s Card of the Month is Mikaeus, the Unhallowed.
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is a card I have very little experience playing with, but loads of experience playing against. One of the players in our playgroup only ever brings Mikaeus, and even though they are still pretty new to the game, Mikaeus makes them a force to be reckoned with.
Let’s break down his abilities. A 5/5 with Intimidate for six mana isn’t bad, so as far as his body goes we’re off to a good start. “Whenever a Human deals damage to you, destroy it”. This effect is situational, and could either be useless, or a game ending effect, but that’s based on who you’re playing against. “Other non-Human creatures you control get +1/+1 and have undying”. This is the ability that really makes Mikaeus worth playing. Lots of black creatures are typically on the frail side so undying really helps them out, this is also true for Mikaeus’s Lord effect. Secondly, this let’s you abuse “enter the battlefield” effects. There are also many infinite combos that can be created with Mikaeus, including the infamous Murderous Redcap combo if you are running red. However mono black has some options as well, if you prefer to run him as a commander.
Overall, Mikaeus is a great commander and combo enabler. Especially if you are looking to play a creature based black deck. Typically you would want to play zombies since they have great support, but Mikaeus can make other strategies viable as well.
But what do you think? Do you enjoy playing with or against Mikaeus? Do you think he’s a viable commander? What card so you think we should cover next month? Make sure to leave a comment with your opinion below, and be sure to check back next month for August’s pick.
